Bonus Thanksgiving Freebie: Printable Turkey Coloring Page

Last week my kids wanted to "do a craft". I kept offering ideas but my oldest kept rejecting everything I came up with. She had just celebrated Thanksgiving in her preschool class the day before with a feast. They learned all about the Pilgrims and Plymouth Rock - so she wanted something to do with Thanksgiving. So I whipped up this little coloring page. Enjoy!

As always, to get, right click on the image and save to the desktop. Print on standard 8.5" x 11" white paper. Enjoy!

Here's the REAL deal

I've been neglecting the blog recently.... on purpose. I had a conversation with a friend several weeks ago and I realized I'm kinda over it. The fake blog-ness that is. I don't want to be someone in this little blog world who looks like she has it all together. Trust me, I don't! I'm pretty much a mess.

I just don't like doing tutorials or "crafty" things. It's not me! After this conversation, I realized I was doing those things simply for something to put on my blog, which pretty much makes me a fraud. Pretty much.  So if you are still reading after that terrible confession, I just have to say I'm sorry! I'm going to do my best to make it up to you.

Why? Because I don't want others to feel like they just don't quite measure up after reading my blog. Because I feel that way a lot.  Because I'm trying to teach my children to be honest and real. Because I'm trying to live a more authentic life.

I'm not even sure what to write about, but I promise from now on it will be authentic and real. It'll be the stuff I truly find enjoyable and exciting. So for now, here's to the good, bad and ugly. Here's to the real  inside all of us!

Happy Monday!

Color Palettes I'm Loving: Fall Decorating Edition

I saw this amazing fireplace/mantel decoration photo on Freshome and thought what an awesome color palette it would be! The architecture reminded me of some of the old styles I remember from the East Coast. However, the seafoam color on the walls gives it a modern twist. Oh, how I wish that was my actual fireplace instead of the standard issue white one I have at my apartment. Then again, I guess I'm lucky to have a fireplace in an apartment, so I shouldn't complain too loudly.

My Fall Decorations: Wreath & Mantel

Before discussing the extent of my fall decorations, I should probably warn you! I am a minimalist when it comes to decorating. Mostly because I never seem to get around to it. So, the only decorating I have gotten to this fall is my mantel and my front door.

My front Door Wreath: I created this adorable wreath for my front door. I found all the items in the $1 bins at Target (love Target!) and whipped it up last Friday afternoon with my girls. They each got their own mini wreaths to decorate, which are now proudly placed on the mantel.

Mantel Decorations: These are a mixture of items I already had and items that were created. The mini wreaths are the ones my little darlings created. The subway art print is this month's free printable. The other tree print was a Father's Day gift to my husband. It was created by this amazing artist on Etsy in her shop Customs By Bernolli (She was such a pleasure to work with!). The plant is an orchid my sweet friend brought me after my most recent miscarriage. I guess I should've warned her about my black thumb! The angel figurine was sent by another friend after my first miscarriage. The H was a blank plywood letter that I spray-painted and stuck up there for good measure.

Ok, so I'm seriously doomed in the decorating department. Good thing you only see what I show you. *wink*

Don't forget to check out our new Photo Greeting Cards in the shop which debut TODAY!

Happy Monday!

5 Minute Fridays: I am a Habitual Aborter (otherwise known as Recurrent Pregnancy Loss)

photos via here and here

There. I've said it. I am a habitual aborter. At least, that is what it says in my medical chart. I had my fourth miscarriage a few weeks ago. It sucks. We told very few people we were pregnant. "I don't want to jinx it this time," I told my husband.  Having to go un-tell people is awful.

I hate when people feel sorry for me.  I feel like it is my pain and they are somehow not entitled to be sad for me. Being sad for me inevitably leads to awkward silence. Or worse, the "comforting" things people say when they don't know what to say. "You should be more grateful for the children you have." "Maybe it's God's way of telling you that you shouldn't have anymore." "Infertility and miscarriage are natural selection." "It is usually a chromosome issue. It's better you lost the baby now." "Don't worry, you'll have another." "You'll see those babies in heaven." I've lost track of all the truly hurtful things people have said to us in their quest to say something comforting. There are also the people who just avoid you because they don't know what to say. Some people pretend nothing ever happened. That's painful too. That's why we just stopped telling people whenever I'm pregnant.

Even more, I want people to feel sorry with us. The feelings of loneliness can be overwhelming for those experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. They feel as if no one can understand how much they hurt or how much they miss that little baby-even though it was only a part of their world for a few short weeks.  Studies have shown that the grief experienced in a miscarriage is just as intense as someone losing a loved one. Because that baby is a loved one. And to lose a baby is a very isolating experience.

So what can you do to help? Be informed! Become educated about infant/child & pregnancy loss. In fact, October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. Here are a few resources:

The Compassionate Friends
Miscarriage Support
The truths about grieving a miscarriage or infant loss
Coping as a couple after a loss

Here are my tips from personal experience:

1. Don't just assume because it is not talked about it's not happening. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage (that's over 600,000 in a year).  1% of couples suffer recurrent miscarriage (defined as 2 or more losses in a row). 1 in every 148 babies is stillborn. 3 in 1000 babies dies shortly after birth. 27,864 infants die every year before their first birthday.

2. Don't assume because those who experienced the loss are not talking about it that they are over it. In fact, for a more accurate list of the do's and don'ts I recommend reading this article.

3. Don't forget that loss affects both mother and father. See this essay from and OB regarding his personal experience with miscarriage.

4. Don't say "comforting" things. Honestly, the brutal truth is that nothing you say right now is going to make the hurt less. But not saying anything can make it hurt more. Just say you are sorry.

5. Grieve with us, not for us. Acknowledge that sometimes life just sucks. If you don't know what to say, just say so! And then share your time lending an ear or a helping hand. Share a meal. Call, write and basically be a good friend.  Do something thoughtful that shows your love. After our 3rd miscarriage my best friend (who, unfortunately, has also experienced more than her fair share of miscarriages) sent me a pinata filled with candy. She sent it "just in case I needed to hit something". It was the best thing anyone could have done.

6. And to those of you who have suffered, please know you are not alone! I'm suffering right along with you as are many others out there. You are not alone.

Lastly, I just want explain why now? Why am I coming forward to share our experiences in such a public way now? The answer is simple and honest.

I am tired of this being "our little secret".

It's not that we planned it that way, we just felt we didn't have support. Emotionally we couldn't handle the stigma. And I don't want others to feel that way. Pregnancy loss is not something to be ashamed about. I feel like talking about it now will help me get over the stigma surrounding it. And maybe in sharing our story I've helped you too.

Color Palettes I'm Loving: African Violet and Poppy Red

On September 6, Pantone announced the Spring 2013 Color Trends Report. (Click here to see the full report.)

The color trends are similar to the Fall 2012 trends, but with a little more pop and brightness. I think my favorite color palette of all the colors has to be African Violet and Poppy Red.

Below are some examples of how to use these colors for your spring wedding. What do you think?

Columbus Day: Facts and a Few Crafts

photo via

"In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue..."

That's all I really remember about Columbus Day from school. My 3rd grade teacher taught us that song about Columbus. Since today is officially Columbus Day (declared in 1937 by FDR) I thought I'd add some facts about the day from History.com.

1. The first official Columbus Day celebration occurred in 1792 in New York.
2. The US isn't the only country to celebrate Columbus Day. Many of the countries in the "new world" also celebrate it. But in many Latin American countries it is called "Dia de la Raza" (Day of the Race).
3. Some cities have replaced Columbus Day celebrations with alternative days of rememberance (typically because the institution of Columbus Day came after intense lobbying by a Catholic organization). such as Berkeley's Indiginous Peoples Day, Hawaii's Discovery Day and South Dakota's  Native American Day.
4. Many celebrations are a mixture of Italian heritage since Columbus was Italian.
5. Check out this video for the "Real Story of Columbus"

5 Minute Fridays: When I Grow Up

comic via

I wanted to be lots of thing when I was a little kid. I wanted to be a nurse until I ended up in the hospital for months and changed my mind (another post for another day). I wanted to be a nun until my mom told me we were't Catholic so I couldn't be. Then I wanted to be a supermodel until a little boy in my 3rd grade class told me I wasn't skinny enough.

For a while in high school I wanted to be an actress. Freshman year of college I wanted to be a journalist. I actually changed majors 5 times in college - I almost became a social worker. Eventually I did become a teacher. Then a Mom. And now a small business owner who designs stationery and accessories! If you would've told me when I was little this is what I'd be doing I would've laughed.

Funny how life has a way of surprising us. What did you want to be?

Pantone Fall 2012 Color Fashion Trends

Did you know that every season Pantone announces what the predicted color trends will be? They usually announce several months in advance (so this is not news to some of you). For spring 2012 it was this. For fall they truly are smashing! Check it out here.

I am really inspired by a few of theses colors and think they would make an awesome color palette for a fall soiree. What do you think? Below are my fans.

5 Minute Fridays: In Real Life

It's so interesting the perception people get of others when they are "on the outside". For instance, I had a friend who had read a biography of a particular individual and her reasoning behind encouraging me to read the book was, "He is such a good man!" This was an interesting comment to me. She didn't know this man. How could she know his character? Especially based off a book he wrote about himself?

I think the biggest compliment someone ever gave me was that I am reliable, predictable and consistent.  At the time it wasn't meant to be a compliment (my boyfriend in college was breaking up with me!), but over the years it has been what has stuck with me. I think it is probably one of my most defining attributes. Maybe it makes me boring like the college boyfriend thought. Or maybe it makes me unique in this world of chaos. Regardless, it's worked for me so far! In fact, my husband says it is what he likes most about me. He knew what he was getting when he married me and I haven't disappointed him yet. That's got to count for something, right?

So, to everyone out there who reads this blog, (there are a few of you, aren't there?) THIS IS ME - in real life. Come along for the ride and you'll get to know me. Afterall, I am pretty predictable.

Fall Color Palette: Boston Blue, Burnt Orange, Golden Tainoi, Fiji Green and Russet

I'm so missing Virginia! I went to college there and this color combination reminds me of the beautiful trees along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall. These amazing colors make a beautiful fall color palette. They are so rich and vibrant and compliment each other so well.

I can't wait to show you October's Free Printable. We designed it with this beautiful color palette (and chevron design) in mind. Check back on October 1!

DIY Fall Decorations

I'm not a big decorator. In fact, we've lived in our new place for almost 7 months and there are still no pictures on the walls. I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet. But I like how things look pretty and decorated! I am thinking about trying my hand at a few simple fall decorations for the mantel. Baby steps.

Check out these awesome DIY fall decorations I found. Click on the name link for the tutorial:

The Flu

pic via

I am so sorry I have been super MIA recently! My family was visiting for a week. Then shortly after they left I came down with a terrible case of the flu! I lost my voice and was in bed for several days. I'm slowly recovering, but I am seriously wiped out! Hopefully next week I'll be back to my normal schedule of posting. Thanks for being patient!

5 Minute Fridays: 100 posts and Applesauce

This is the 100th post on our blog! I really can't believe it! I was putting it off trying to think of something ah-ma-zing to write about or a fancy tutorial to teach you. But my family was in town this past week and I have just been too busy! So instead this post is about applesauce.

Not just any applesauce! Applesauce that is so delicious and home made. When my family was visiting we went to this cute little family owned farm here in Northern California called Denver Dan's Apple Patch that has a u-pick orchard. Only a few varieties were ready this early, but at only $1/lb. we loaded up! When we got to the register we realized we had 22 lbs of apples. Oh my!

I knew my little family of 4 would never be able to eat that many apples before they went bad, so I enlisted the help of my good friend Jennie to help me do some canning. It was awesome! I have to admit since I'd never tried it before, she did most of the work, but it was a great experience and I'm so proud of these 8 little pints of applesauce!

Color Palettes I'm Loving: Deep Purple and Orange

A color palette I've really come to admire recently is purple with orange. But not just any purple and orange. To make it truly spectacular and appropriate for a fall wedding, it must be a deep royal purple and a warm toasted orange. I love how the two colors compliment each other so well! Check out a few of the beautiful ideas I've seen around for this truly amazing color palette:
